24-hr bandh called in Jalpaiguri

The Bangla O Bangla Bhasha Bachao Committee, a pressure group opposed to the recognition of Gorkhaland, has convened a 24-hour bandh in Jalpaiguri district on 8 March. The bandh call comes following an announcement by the Kamtapur Progressive Party that the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha chief, Mr Bimal Gurung, will be attending a Progressive rally at Mainaguri on that same date.

Progressive president Mr Atul Roy said: “We will organise the rally in support of our demand for a Kamtapur state and the recognition of our language. We have sent an invitation to the GJMM chief and he assured us of participation. We have also invited the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief, Mr Shibu Shoren, and former Parliament speaker, Mr PA Sangma. We all need to fight together to realise our demand for a Kamtapur state.”... MORE...
