Sikkim South District steps in against smoking in public

istrict Collector, South D Anandan has hinted on the strict implementation of the law on the ban in public smoking in South District starting with urban areas including Namchi, Rabong, Jorethang and Melli.

During a meeting of the District Tobacco Control Cell held on January 31, the DC said that a coalition group comprising of members of different departments and local people will be formed for proper implementation of the law.

“Prior to the implementation of the act, people will be informed and awareness on the act will be done, following which the dates will be fixed after which the group and empowered officers will start to implement and enforce the act completely,” he said adding that the steps towards the prohibition will be taken seriously keeping in mind that smoking in public places is an offence”.
