Sikkim Uttarey bridge and a sigh of relief

Uttarey , Sikkim : Residents of Uttarey can now cross the Eshangley Khola without any difficulty or fear.

With the construction of a wooden bridge in Uttarey, it has not only enhanced the beauty of this Himalayan village but also fulfilled the long pending demands of the locals.

Made of wood and flanked by cable wires, the 20 meter bridge is clearly a work of art.

This eco-friendly bridge was built by Sher Hang Subba, President, Sikkim Progressive Party.

Mr Subba said, “Over the years people from the surrounding villages had faced great difficulties to cross the river especially during monsoons. Having seen these problems I built this bridge not as a politician but as a human being. Before this my father and grand father also built bridges here but got washed away in the rains. It was my turn now.”

It maybe mentioned here that last year, two persons were reportedly washed away by the river water.

Clarifying that no political motives is there behind sponsoring the construction of the bride, Mr Subba said, “This type of work is a good deed and every human being need to cultivate such good deeds in one’s life.”

Named “Saino Pool”, the bridge, constructed two and half kilometres ahead Uttarey township was inaugurated yesterday by PL Gautam, a social worker based in Hee Bermiok, West Sikkim. From here, the newly built bridge can now connect five villages.

More than 200 people from in and around Uttarey were present during the inauguration ceremony.

In his address, Mr Gautam stated that by building this bridge, Sher Hang Subba was doing social work for the people of Uttaray and surrounding areas.

Talking to SIKKIM EXPRESS, a villager said, “Several petitions for this bridge submitted to the local Panchayats and our Area MLA have been unfulfilled. Today, we are rather thankful to Sher Hang Subba for having sponsored the construction of the bridge.”
