Morcha begins hunger strike

The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha began its pre-declared hunger strike at Garubathan in Kalingpong sub-division today demanding unconditional authorisation to organise conventions and rallies in the Dooars.

The Darjeeling district magistrate, Mr Surendra Gupta, said that the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation. “We have prepared a team of doctors to monitor the agitators’ health. The BDO, Garubathan, and police have been instructed to keep an eye on the overall condition,” the DM, said. According to the GJMM leadership, chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had in the 21 January meeting with GJMM representatives assured to consider their demands seriously but the administration is yet to take steps in that direction.
