DARJEELING, November 5: The annual exams of Darjeeling schools in November would have to be postponed as students are required to actively participate in the Gorkhaland movement, according to the Gorkha Jana Vidhyarthi Morcha, the student's wing of the GJMM. They claim that this is for the success of the upcoming tripartite meeting on Gorkhaland.
“We will request the institution heads to postpone the home exams in all schools. This does not include students of classes ten and twelve who will appear for their board exams next year,” president of GJVM, M. Kismat Chettri said today. Although no action plan has been prepared, the programme begins from 8 November. A massive rally of school and college students from Darjeeling sub-division has been organised in the town. “Nearly 15,000 students will assemble in Darjeeling on that day. There are only 16 months left for the March 2010 deadline by GJMM president, Mr. Bimal Gurung to achieve Gorkhaland. We will support this wholeheartedly because our future depends on it,” Mr. Chettri stated.
On earlier occasions too students in the Hill's observed hunger strikes, staged a dharna in Kolkata and met CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to demand a separate state. Refuting allegations that students were being involved in politics, Mr. Chettri said: “There isn't a single university, neither medical nor technical colleges in the Hills. The students are simply demanding their rights and that is not politics”.
Moreover, a diktat issued by GJMM makes it compulsory for college students to wear their traditional dress three days a week in support of Gorkhaland.
“The party has put its request before the heads of educational institutions and they will issue a notification to make the dress code compulsory,”he said.
