The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has decided to start an indefinite hunger strike from Thursday to demand that the Standing Committee on Home Affairs visit Darjeeling.
“Citing law and order problem, the Bengal government has worked in tandem with Subash Ghisingh to cancel the committee’s scheduled visit and suppress our voices. We will start a fast-unto-death from February 7,” said Morcha president Bimal Gurung at a public meeting here, about 14km from Darjeeling, today.
The committee, currently scrutinising the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2007 drafted to incorporate the hills in the Sixth Schedule, was supposed to visit Darjeeling for three days starting February 6. The tour has been cancelled.
Twenty-one Morcha members will go on fast in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong.
In another development, T. Wangchuk, the executive officer of the DGHC finance department, today resigned from his post for “personal reasons”. D.T. Tamlong, the chief principal secretary of the council, said the resignation has not yet been accepted.
The Morcha had on January 6 demanded that all DGHC officers resign from their posts by February 29.
