West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Thursday had a fresh round of discussions with the Gorkhaland activists as the two sides claimed the meeting was a success.
But the pro-Gorkhaland outfit, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), gave no commitment on withdrawing its fast-unto-death in Kalimpong.
Briefing newspersons after a 90-minute meeting, where he was present, state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said the parleys were “successful”.
GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, who led the delegation, conceded that the deliberations were held in a congenial atmosphere. “We had walked out of the meeting in the previous round. The chief minister seemed more adamant then. Today he was more flexible.” MORE...

The government, however, was upbeat that the contentious issue of allowing GJM to hold rallies in the Dooars have now been pushed to the background. On the other hand, issues of reopening of closed tea gardens in the Dooars, compensation to people whose houses in the region had been looted, withdrawal of cases slapped on GJM supporters and protection to GJM supporters living in the Dooars dominated the talks.
"Workers of closed tea gardens are suffering. They are not getting even the basic amenities," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said. "The talks were held in a cordial atmosphere. But we will be satisfied only when the government takes some practical steps to fulfil our demands," he added. MORE...

A GJM delegation met the chief minister on Thursday where it placed the demand for reopening the gardens. GJM leader Roshan Giri told reporters after the meeting that the GJM delegation had also urged the state government to allow them to hold meetings and rallies in the plains of the Dooars and release GJM activists who had allegedly been “falsely implicated” by the state police. GJMM hunger strike continues - five in critical condition

Seventeen party supporters have been on an indefinite fast since January 29 to exert pressure on the state government for permission to carry out its Dooars Chalo campaign. Five Adivasi supporters of the Morcha joined the fast yesterday.

Government says it’s considering their demands, Morcha won’t call off hunger strike
The condition of several of the 17 supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, who went on a fast-unto-death in front of the Garubathan police station on January 29, has turned criticial, said senior Morcha leaders on Sunday.
