Congress criticises WB govt for escape of Nicole Tamang

The Congress today criticised the West Bengal government for the escape of Nicol Tamang, the prime accused in the murder of the top Gorkha leader Madan Tamang, from Pintail village near Siliguri.

“How could Nicol, a central committee member of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, escape from CID custody in the presence of hundreds of policemen?” WBPCC chief Manas Bhunia asked.

He wondered if Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will continue to rely on the CID for the investigation into Madan Tamang’s killing in Darjeeling on May 21 after Nicole’s escape on Aug 22 and demanded a CBI inquiry into the killing of the Gorkha leader.

“Madan Tamang’s wife Bharati came to us sought our assistance,” he said. Bhunia said that the Inspector General of Police, North Bengal, should be show-caused and the district police chief transferred for Nicol’s escape.

He also announced the formation of a co-ordination committee by a former bureaucrat Sukhvilas Verma for a study of the situation in Darjeeling district and adjoining areas in Jalpaiguri district.

“Members of the committee will talk to the people of Darjeeling and also the Adivasi Vikas Parishad in the adjoining Dooars and Terai in North Bengal. It will submit its report within one-and-a-half months,” he said.
