Gangtok: The BJP and the Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad Party have joined forces to play the role of main opposition in the state politics.
In what is regarded as a significant development in Sikkim politics, the president of BJP's state unit, Padam Chettri and SHRP president, AD Subba, said the two parties had decided to jointly work out a political strategy to take on the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front government led by chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.
"We will showcase our unity at a public meeting in Singtam tomorrow where the future course of political programmes of the two parties will be made public," the leaders of the two parties said.
Pamphlets containing the common agenda of the two parties will also be distributed to the people tomorrow to make public their commitment, the leaders said.
Meanwhile, political observers in Sikkim are of the opinion that the alliance between the two opposition parties was aimed at marginalising the Congress and in particular its leader and former chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari.
