Dooars: Patkar to spread peace message

Political animosity bordering on ethnic strife for and against Gorkhaland is punching holes in north Bengal’s social fabric, particularly in the two districts of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. The dangerous trend, so far fuelled, could dislodge reason, peace and the will to coexist unless reined in one way or the other.

The message, if lost on many, is finding substance with some. And so, a cluster of pressure groups with Miss Medha Patekar at the vanguard has taken on itself to do what is needful at this crucial hour ~ try and embalm the sores.

The initiative, which is to be launched under the banner of Peace and Solidarity Mission, gets underway in Siliguri on 8 February and expand to the trouble-torn Dooars and the Darjeeling hills in phases. Most importantly, the initiative envisages a dialogue between the different communities of north Bengal inclusive of the Bengali, Nepali/Gorkha, Rajbanshi/Kamtapuri, Adivasi speaking people in addition to some of the smaller communities like the Rava, Boro, Garo and others.
