Darjeeling Hills-plains divide puts CPM in spot

The clash in the Dooars on Saturday apparently drove a wedge between the Hills and the plains. And unlike during Subash Ghisingh’s Gorkhaland agitation, the ruling CPM completely isolated in the Hills this time has been overpowered by the raging sentiments in the plains.

CPM’s Darjeeling district secretariat member and minister Asok Bhattacharya, however, is not giving up. “There is a difference between Ghisingh and the new Gorkhaland avatar Bimal Gurung. Ghisingh whipped up Gorkha sentiments, but he never went into a clash with the plains people. Gurung, on the other hand, is provocative. He is aware of the Adivasi sentiments in the Dooars, and deliberately sent his supporters to create trouble.
