Rally for CBI probe into Samsul death

Members of the Muslim community in Darjeeling today brought out a rally demanding the intervention of the National Human Right Commission to pave the way for a CBI inquiry into the “mysterious” death of Samsul Zaman in Siliguri recently. They also closed their shops for two hours.

The 35-year-old resident of Chappalpatti in Siliguri had allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on October 20. His family members had alleged that the trader was threatened by police officials to be implicated in a false case if he did not pay them the money they demanded. Biman Poddar, an assistant sub-inspector of police posted at the district intelligence branch, had been accused of abetting the alleged suicide. The CID has been investigating the death.

Today, the sessions judge in Darjeeling granted bail to Poddar.

Ali Akhter, president, Anjuman-E-Islamia, Darjeeling, said: “Samsul had died under mysterious circumstances. His body was found lying beside railway tracks and the Siliguri police are behind his death. We demand the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission and a CBI inquiry into the death as there is an apprehension that the state government will not deliver justice in the matter.”

The association has written to G.P. Rajan, member, National Human Rights Commission.

Taranga Pandit, Poddar’s defence lawyer, said the court had granted conditional bail to the officer. The court released the accused after furnishing a bail surety of Rs 10,000 and also directed him to surrender before the additional chief judicial magistrate within 15 days.

Poodar had been suspended from his job on October 23, after he was booked under under Section 306 of the IPC (abetting suicide), following a complaint lodged by Samsul’s family. He had been transferred to the Darjeeling police line on half salary.
