MLA blames CPM for Hill impasse

SILIGURI, Nov. 12: The ‘Progotishil Indira Congress’ (PIC) founder leader and MLA Mr Somen Mitra today alleged that the ruling CPI-M was instrumental in the impromptu rise of the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha leader Mr Bimal Gurung and was also responsible for the current turmoil in the Hills for a separate state.

Addressing the Press in Siliguri this afternoon, Mr Mitra said that it was the same CPI-M led government's discrimination against the Hills that gave birth to Mr Subash Ghisingh in the 1980's and is also now abetting the excessive rise of Mr Gurung.
“We don't support the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state but nevertheless, we admit that the LF government has been discriminating against the Darjeeling Hills in all respects, just like the rest of north Bengal, for over three decades now...The statehood demand might have become the stimulating factor in Darjeeling now, but the agitation there is basically of economic nature and is a fight for equal development,” the former Congress heavyweight opined. Mr Mitra said the Darjeeling dispute should be resolved amicably without compromising the integrity of the state and all concerned must refrain from resorting to provocative steps that might ruin peace.

On the other hand, commenting on the verdict in the Tapashi Malik murder case announced today, the PIC leader said that now it is proved that the state police/CID act under bias and if more such cases are handed over to the CBI, the investigation would unearth the CPI-M's ‘heinous crimes'. “Now that, two CPI-M leaders have been convicted and sentenced for the murder of Tapasi Mallik, being the functioning head of the government Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee must resign voluntarily,” he added.
Apart from Mr Mitra, the PIC president Mr Jayanta Bhattacharya and Siliguri organising leader Mr Subrata Dutta also attended today's Press conference. The two state leaders are touring north Bengal for forming the PIC organisation in the region.
