Siliguri violence: Probe sought

DARJEELING, April 13: At a meeting between the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha and the DGHC administrator Mr BL Meena today, the GJMM demanded a high-level inquiry into the violence at Siliguri on 9 April.

“It was decided that an impartial inquiry headed by a retired High Court judge will be conducted soon,” said Mr Roshan Giri, general secretary of the DGHC.

The GJMM has demanded that the DSP of Siliguri Mr Pradeep Dutta and the IC of Pradhannagar PS Mr Swapan Kumar Ghosh be suspended immediately, alleging the two were responsible for inciting communal violence on that particular day. “We also want the 11 innocent people arrested for the violence to be released soon,” said Mr Giri.
Among the other demands, the GJMM leadership has demanded that they be allowed to hold meetings and rallies in Siliguri and Dooars as well. However it was decided by both parties that development would be given prime importance. “They will carry on with their agitation but developmental work will be carried out simultaneously,” said Mr Meena, adding that an amount of 121 crore was lying unspent with the DGHC which would be spent on priority-based developmental work.
