Kalimpong, Feb. 19: Residents here have warned Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders that they risk losing the goodwill of the people if they backtrack on their promise and continue to pursue the politics of bandh in the hills.
The residents, under the banner of Citizens’ Rights Forum, Kalimpong, met the unit president of the Morcha, Kalyan Dewan, secretary Samuel Gurung and other party leaders here today and expressed their concern over the frequent disruption of normal life in the hills because of political strife.
They regretted that contrary to assurances given to them by Morcha president Bimal Gurung, the party is using the same forms of protest that were employed by the GNLF earlier, thereby inconveniencing the ordinary people.
“Please don’t indulge in the kind of politics that will lead us to lose trust in your party,” pleaded Forum president N. P. Dixit.
When Dewan sought to reason that the indefinite bandh should be seen as a protest against the Sixth Schedule status, A.P. Rai, a senior member of the forum, countered: “The people are already with you. Now, what will your party do if the GNLF, too, resorts to such indefinite bandhs?”
However, the Morcha leader stuck to his guns. “The Centre and the Bengal government are hell-bent on shoving the Sixth Schedule status down our throats. If we don’t oppose them now, the special status will become a fait accompli. If that happens, it will irreparably divide our society,” Dewan said.
The party leadership said such sacrifices had to be made in pursuit of a just cause. “We appreciate your concern and suggestions, and promise to take up the matter with our central committee,” Dewan said.
Responding to a query from hotel-owners, the Morcha general secretary said his party had opened a helpline to aid stranded tourists. “We will safely escort them out of Kalimpong as and when they approach us,” he said.
On the party’s decision to keep NH31A out of the bandh’s purview, Gurung said all vehicles with Sikkim permits, including those bearing Bengal registration numbers, would be given safe passage.
