Sikkim: Ideal getaway for nature lovers

Bhubaneshwar: In a bid to promote Sikkim as a major tourist destination, a 10- member team from Sikkim Tourism Cooperative Society conducted several promotional campaigns in the State over the weekend.

They visited Puri and interacted with travel agents here. One of the primary objectives of the mission was to create awareness among travellers that the state had much more to offer than just being a seasonal spot to spend some quality time.

“We want travellers to visit Sikkim round the year instead of just during the travel seasons to enjoy the kaleidoscope of colours that the State offers,” said society president Kishore Khadke, adding “once people are there they will realise it is a veritable heaven for nature lovers.”

Visiting Sikkim can also include package tours to neighbouring Bhutan and a trip to Nathu La Pass, the gateway to China. Conservative estimates put the cost per person per day a little over Rs 2,500 visiting the Himalayan State.

Incidentally, Orissa has seen a steady rise in the number of people to Sikkim over the years, especially to the sought after Darjiling-Gangtok circuit.

While about three lakh tourists visit the place annually, Khadke said, the tourism department is eyeing much more than that figure.

“In fact, we have the potential to accommodate double that number at present following the opening of a number of hotels and innovative arrangements like putting up tourists in villages in well furnished accommodations.”

The visiting team comprised people from various wings of the tourism sector like guides, travel agents, hoteliers and transport operators.

They are being generously sponsored by the Sikkim Tourism Department under a mission called ‘101 days all India cross country expedition.’

The team is also being actively supported by Mayfair Group which is coming up with a project in Gangtok soon.
