Cops injured in Sikkim clash

Gangtok: Three police personnel including the superintendent of police (South), Mr GK Verma, were injured in a clash with Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad supporters at Kamrang in Namchi yesterday.

“A group of SHRP supporters led by their youth president, Mr Basant Rai, and youth convener (South), Mr Pema Gyalpo, challenged police on duty and went on a riot that lasted about an hour,” said Mr Shreedhar Rao, DIG (Range) today. “The riot started when police tried to check the documents of the SHRP party vehicles. The supporters refused to allow police do so and physically confronted the police,” he added.

The three allegedly offending vehicles were seized by police. Police have also registered a case against the involved party youths holding them responsible for rioting, obstructing police on duty and for damaging public property.

In counter allegation SHRP leader, Mr Tara Shresta, said: “Police tried to stop our vehicles and forcefully tried to seize the vehicles but our supporters refused to allow them do so, which led to the altercation.”
