Suicide in Police lock up

Gangtok : Two policemen were suspended due to negligence in their duty as an under trial committed suicide in police lock-up at Singtam in East Sikkim yesterday. Two policemen Tshetan Bhutia, a sub inspector and Surendra Thapa, were suspended when an under trial Vikram Viswakarma (23), committed suicide by hanging himself in the toilet of the of the police station at Singtam. According to the police, some taxi drivers caught the accused red handed with stolen stereo, sound box and some cassettes and handed him over to the Singtam police station on Thursday night. Police then registered and filed a case against the accused under Section of IPC for theft and put the accused behind the bar. “We will inquire into the incident and take action against the duo," DIG, Mr Akshay Sachdeva said. Meanwhile, sub-divisional magistrate, SP East Mr MS Tulli and Mr Sachdeva are investigating it thoroughly. The incident occurred at around 4 pm yesterday. Earlier, a similar incident had occurred at Temi police station in South Sikkim where an accused made an attempt to suicide in 1997.
