The Darjeeling district CPM today reiterated its solidarity with the GNLF over the implementation of the Sixth Schedule in the hills.

At a district secretariat meeting, CPM leaders unanimously agreed to intensify their activity in the hills to stop “vile attempts to create tension over the issue”.

“We want to convince the hill people that their aspirations are being met,” said Bengal urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya, who is also a member of the district secretariat.

The CPM move follows the formation of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha by expelled GNLF leader Bimal Gurung, who criticised Subash Ghisingh’s party for being happy with the Sixth Schedule and not demanding a separate state.

“Our aim is early implementation of the Sixth Schedule, followed by elections to the new Gorkha council,” Bhattacharya said. “We want to see an elected body take charge of the council and seek cooperation from the GNLF and other hill parties.”
