Cop accused of molestation

Gangtok , Sikkim : A 17-year-old girl from Soreng, West Sikkim, has approached the state women’s commission, accusing the officer-in-charge of the local police station of molesting her at her house.

In a complaint lodged yesterday, the girl said the officer-in-charge of the Soreng police station had visited her house “frequently at night” and on occasions when she was alone, had molested her.

The father of the girl has also lodged a complaint with the superintendent of police (West) against the officer.

A commission official said a case has been registered against the particular police officer. “A date for hearing would be fixed after the panchayat elections,” he added.

Deputy inspector-general of police (range) Akshay Sachdeva said the subdivisional police officer of Soreng has been asked to file a report on the complaints.

In another case, the National Human Rights Commission has asked Sikkim police to submit a report within four weeks on the murder of Mahesh Subba in Daramdim, West Sikkim, in July. Four of the murderers, all relatives of Mahesh, have already been caught, while the fifth had spilled the beans on the others before committing suicide.

The Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad had approached the commission, claiming that Mahesh was a party member and it was a political murder.
