HEA postpones strike

Darjeeling : The Hill Employees’ Association (HEA), N.B. Singh Road faction, has decided to postpone the 72-hour general strike across the hills which was supposed to have started from August 22.

The strike had been called by the HEA, a GNLF affiliate, as part of its month-long agitation to demand the immediate removal of “additional” army personnel from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) here. The association also wants the removal of the principal Col. J.S. Dhillon and vice-principal Maj. Vibhav.

N.B. Kalikotey, general secretary, HEA, said: “Since the government is taking positive steps to solve the problem at the HMI, we decided to postpone the strike for some time.”

The defence ministry has decided to form a high-level committee to look into the demands of the civil employees of the HMI. The stand-off between the civilian staff and the army had reached a stage where the mountaineering institute was shut down for five days from July 27.
