Darjeeling / Kalimpong: From waste to art — this message will take centrestage as the hills observe World Environment Day on Tuesday.

A few artists in Darjeeling have created a sculpture, made solely from the waste collected from the garbage chute in the town. “The alarming increase in waste inspired our members to organise Waste Art and Mixed Media Show. The aim of the event is to make people look at waste as a recyclable resource. That way, the garbage can be reused and the town can be kept clean,” said Dipang Lama, the founder member of the PRO.Darjeeling, an NGO. The five-day show, which will start from Tuesday, will be held in collaboration with Darjeeling Initiative, DLR Prerna, Darjeeling police, Inner Wheel Club of Darjeeling and Darjeeling Himalayan Art Academy.

While the primary goal of the event is to create awareness about environment through creative approach, efforts are also on to provide a platform to artists from different fields.

From Kalimpong, a troika of Praful Rao, Samten Kabo and Chinlop Fudong Lepcha will come with a cache of their framed works. Each photographer will have six pictures on display. Gaurav Pradhan from Kalimpong will participate in the show, where his digital art will be displayed. He will also set up a web-design counter, Webworkz.

“In every category, we will have competitions for school and college students. Professional artists, however, will not join the competition,” said Sweta Pradhan of PRO.D.

A discussion will be held on Kiran Desai’s award winning novel, The Inheritance of Loss. Besides, a session will also be conducted on madal, where Dilip Bishwa, an exponent on the instrument, will be present.

This is not all — students from Ghoom Girls’ High School will organise a street play and on Saturday, the last day, residents of Darjeeling will walk to the municipal garbage chute here.
