Darjeeling: The Gorkha National Students’ Front (GNSF) — the students’ wing of the GNLF — has decided to withdraw their proposed 72-hour general strike in the hills following a request from governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
“We met the governor at Raj Bhavan yesterday, when he asked us to withdraw the strike, which was supposed to be held from June 18. We will not go on with the strike,” said Asok Chhetri, spokesman, GNSF (central committee).
The GNSF had called the three-day general strike in the hills, demanding the immediate appointment of a principal at Darjeeling Government College. They had also demanded that the 47 vacant posts at the institute be filled at the earliest. Chhetri said Gandhi has promised to take up the issue with the state government.
With the GNSF withdrawing the strike, those associated with the tourism industry breathed a sigh of relief.
