Gangtok, Sikkim: The Medical Council of India (MCI) notification recognising the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences has finally come through.

The Union health ministry issued a circular on Friday, which says the recognition comes into force with retrospective effect from March 2006. The institute’s first batch of 90-odd students, who finished their internship this year, can now register themselves under the council as medical practitioners. The current students can do so after completion of the course.

“We are very happy and would like to thank varsity officials and the state government for pursuing the matter,” said a student from the first batch.
