Gymkhana Club incident

Darjeeling: The hill town today reacted with shock and disbelief to the incident in which three members of Darjeeling Gymkhana Club were found having sex with a woman in the card room.

A press release issued by club chairman Mamanchand Agarawal this evening said “necessary legal action has been initiated against the accused members”.

Earlier, the All Gorkha Students’ Union (Agsu), an apolitical body, demanded that the club take “legal action” against the three businessmen. “They should be arrested,” said Roshan Giri, president of Agsu (central committee).

Pranay Rai, the GNLF MLA from Darjeeling, has “condemned the incident” while Deepak Gurung, president, GNLF Darjeeling branch committee, has demanded “appropriate action”.

Sources said police have initiated a suo motu case under Section 290. In a separate incident, seven boys and a girl were arrested this morning for “indecent behaviour in public places”. Residents of the town had earlier told the group to move out of the house where they had been staying, but the teenagers had apparently refused, following which a police complaint was lodged.

The 14-member club committee will convene a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the showcause notice slapped on the three offenders who are expected to reply by then.

A section of the club’s 300 members are angry that the authorities took almost a week — the incident took place on May 11 — to issue showcause notices. They cited an earlier instance in which action was initiated almost within 48 hours against a member for his involvement in a skirmish on the Gymkhana premises.
